The Author - the Wilderness Years

  1. Was it during this period that you were friends with Max Brod, Kafka's literary executor? Any stories to tell?

  2. They were to meet only once, when Max Brod was already an old man. Frail and rather confused, he had travelled from his home in Tel Aviv to London to attend a rare performance of Janacek's Glagolitic Mass. After repeated requests for an introduction, the Author was finally invited to the hotel room where Brod mistook him for a room service waiter and kept shouting: "Who ordered the gefilte fish? Who ordered the gefilte fish?" in an angry voice. The old man became so agitated that the Author was asked to leave.
